How does the garden teach us about math and language? That was the focus of the Field Sprouts’ Nature Hour, provided by Looseleaf Learning for third graders participating in the WJCC Summer School program. Students made handcrafted journals and pencils and used them to record their thoughts about nature, exploring different parts of speech and writing diamante poems about things they noticed in their school garden. Students also learned how important math is in the context of nature, as they charted different types of wildflower seeds and created paper looms for weaving their leaf-poundings.
Nature offers abundant lessons across the curriculum and enables students to connect to the outdoors and to a fascinating world that is unplugged, active, and inspiring. Plus, it is a whole lot of fun!
